Two one-day psychoeducational workshops to help you learn more about adult ADHD and ways of dealing with your symptoms.
This is a group for parents who wish to understand more about their child’s difficulties, in addition to learning strategies to help support their child.
This group involves
a). helping you understand what ADHD/ADD is and how it affects you b). looking at the strengths and difficulties of living with ADHD c). learning coping strategies and sharing ideas (with particular focus on time management skills) d). meeting other people with similar experiences.
If you prefer accessing individual support as opposed to attending either the Full Attention or Get Connected groups, we also have this on offer.
You will still get access to most of the content covered in the group with the benefit of receiving a bespoke support package.
If you choose to take medication, we will also provide a titration period of approximately 3 months before you are discharged back to your GP.
Titration means that we will start you off on a low dosage and then work with you to possible increase the dosage until a level has been reached that will control your symptoms with the fewest side effects.
The most common medicines used to treat ADHD are known as ‘stimulants’ and the most commonly used stimulant is methylphenidate and Lisdexamfetamine.
Methylphenidate and Lisdexamfetamine are available as short acting tablets which are usually taken 2-3 times daily, or as long acting tablets taken once daily.
Because stimulants are in your body for a short period of time, it is possible to be flexible about when you take them.
Although most people find that when medication is effective they want its benefits all the time, some adults do not want to use medication all of the time and may take breaks at weekends etc.
Where stimulants are not suitable, or not wanted, different types of medication (‘non-stimulants’), such as atomoxetine, are also used.
These are usually taken once daily. Unlike stimulants, non-stimulants take time to build up in the body and need to be taken every day. We will talk to you about the best type of treatment for you and will work with you to get the dose right.
This can take time, individuals vary in the amount of medication they need.
We will also want to monitor your physical health while taking medication, including your sleep, appetite, weight, pulse and blood pressure.
Once you have been started on ADHD medication, subsequent review appointments will take place regularly to monitor medication response as well as provide psychosocial advice and support if required.
